1 - As an
introduction : - how old are you, - Before GT - The beginning of
GT - Why GT - COLOSSAMITE beginning & end
Chad Popple 26 years
old, Ed Rodriguez 26 years old, John Dieterich 27 years old .
Before Gorge Trio I played
in a band called BEHEMOTH with Ed and a friend named Nathan Smith,
playing the heaviest music we possibly could. We played a bunch
of shows with Iceburn. That's when we got to be good friends with
those guys. John came to a BEHEMOTH show and dug it. We got together
to play a couple days later and soon Gorge Trio was formed.
Gorge Trio played together
for almost two years before John met Nick. Then COLOSSAMITE was
formed.
Gorge Trio took a hiatus
for a year or two but started up again to do things that we didn't
do in COLOSSAMITE.
COLOSSAMITE ended due
to several reasons- I stayed in Europe, John moved to California
(and joined Deerhoof), Nick and Ed were in disagreement on the direction
they wanted to go, but a half year later found them themselves together
in SICBAY.

2 - You seem
very interested in musics in its "larger" sense (electro, rock,
improvisation), how do you find time for having ICEBURN,"Power of
a lion", Appleseed...Is GT a side project... what do you do in life
???
We are all interested
in many different kinds of music. I think that open-mindedness comes
thru in our music. An inspiration can come from anything. The end
result might not give any clue to what the original inspiration
was. It could be from a book or it could be from a traditional,
folk, or classical music from anywhere. Even the person or thing
that inspired you to make a particular piece of music might not
recognize anything in it.
As for finding the time
to do the things we do I would say, if it means enough to you, you
will always find the time.
Gorge Trio is not a side
project. I think side projects are things that you don't invest
as much energy into as your "main" project. We all love playing
together and we put everything we can into it.

3 - REPETITIONS
: How do you build your music, how do you feel it...are you in a
particulary mind as you play it, do you imagine things as you play
? Why is GT instrumental....your rapport to singing
How do you build your
music, hmm, that is different with each thing we do. When I write
something it is mostly from the rhythmic end (patterns, cycles,
whatnot). I leave it open to the other guys to do what they do.
When someone else writes something I just try to fit (or not). When
I improvise I do what we feel at that moment. I try not to think.
If you have to stop to think you should probably just stop. I work
on the shit when I practice so I don't have to think about anything
when I play. I simply listen and react- purely intuitive. Gorge
Trio is instrumental so far because none of us has wanted to sing,
maybe that'll change...

4 - YOUR
EXPERIMENTAL SIDE : Is improvisation a real part of GT or is everything
built before ? Let's talk about the difference between your 2 albums...
Yes, improvisation is
an intregal part in what Gorge Trio does. We all love improvising
together, just as we usually love what each other writes. I think
in just about every tune we did there is improvisation somewhere,
even if we know it is only for a set length of time.
The main difference
between the two albums are 'dead chicken' was preconceived tunes,
some more than others (a couple of the songs were >recorded with
only talking about what we were going to do) and 'for loss >of'
was completely improvised music as the original material for >de/re/construction.

5 - FEELINGS...GT
is brut/brutal/melodic & melancolic : Are GT & musics in its larger
sense, your principal outlet...And are you interested in other forms
of "ART"?
Yes

|
6 - How &
why do the collaboration with MILO FINE was decided...why an old
band like this one ?
Milo kicks ass. He played
with us because he likes us, too.
|
|
7 - ELECTRONICS
& GORGE TRIO : Possible or not ?
Electronics kick ass
when you got guys like Ed and John ripping it up.
|
|
8 - END :
Last words concerning musics (and other artistic projects...) you
fall in love with...you want everybody knows.
Come and see us play.
We want come to France and play.
